Episode 21

EP021: Special Guest Clair Chilvers from Mental Health Research UK

This week Liz & Keds are joined by Clair Chilvers one of the founding members of the mental heal charity Mental Health Research UK (MHRUK).

MHRUK is the first UK charity dedicated to raising funds for research into mental illnesses, their causes and cures and raises money to fund students through their PhD research scholarships.

Clair talked about the reasons for setting up the charity due to the lack of mental health research out there at the time. Along with the work they are doing to plug the gaps now, including the following campaigns to raise awareness and funding for further research.

COVID-19 Psychological Trauma PhD Scholarship

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week 2020, MHRUK has launched a campaign to raise £120,000 for a new PhD research scholarship on psychological trauma arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brighten Up

Running on World Mental Health Day, 10th October. Everyone can join in! Just wear your brightest clothes to brighten everyone up as the days become shorter and get people talking about mental health.

Clair will also soon be a published poet, and has kindly sent a Happy poem from her collection for us to share:

A Perfect Breakfast

I get up early

leaving the children sleeping.

It is cool and quiet.

Outside in the white-walled garden

a lemon tree ripe with fruit gives shade

a white marble table, two cushioned chairs.

Greek yogurt with honey

a peach so perfectly ripe

that the stone splits in two.

You can find out more about Mental Health Research UK on their website, on their Mental Research UK Facebook Page and also on Twitter and of course, you can donate to MHRUK to help them continue the vital work they are doing.

Kedren Elliott

My name is Kedren, yes Kedren (my name is a bit strange, like myself).

I'm currently finishing my final year's training to become a counsellor and work at North Staffs Mind.
I'm also someone who has struggled with my mental health and lived with friends and family who have also faced challenges.

Through the happiness hub, I really want to help as many people as I can to find ways to live happier. It doesn't have to be complicated, there are little things we can do every day to help with our mental health and feel happier.

So that's a bit about me, but you can find out more by listening to our Hub Podcast!

Liz Parkin

I'm Liz, Kedren's podcasting side-kick, close friend and gin-buddy for over 10 years.

My mental health challenges started in my early teens and continued through a rather traumatic year in 2004.

It was at this point that I discovered Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) which quite literally changed my life - or maybe my perception on life...

In this podcast I will share with you some of the tips and techniques that I learned whilst training for my NLP Practitioner and then Master Practitioner over 14 years ago. NLP got me through some very dark times and given me a bag of mindset tools and strategies to help me keep my mental health, well... healthy!
